Every year, IUMK organizes the New Yam Festival, a traditional event deeply rooted in Igbo culture. This festival celebrates the cultivation and harvest of yam, a staple food in Igbo communities. In the past, a man whose yam harvest lasted until the next harvest was considered wealthy, highlighting the importance of yam in Igbo society.
The New Yam Festival takes place in August, aligning with the time when yam is typically harvested after being cultivated at the beginning of the year. This annual event serves as a platform to showcase the vibrant and diverse Igbo cultural heritage. People from all walks of life are invited to participate in the festivities, where they can indulge in Igbo cuisine, enjoy traditional music, and partake in lively dance performances.
